6. Burns

Firstly out make-up teacher Sue demonstrated how to create a burn and also the different products you can use and also the different types of Gelatin. Below I have listed the types/ways of Gelatin and also the steps of creating my own burn.

Products:
  • Gelatin (block of gelatin, granules or a bottle)

  • Gelatin can come in different colours however for this burn we are using colourless gelatin (for cheap gelatin just go to Asda)
  • Getatin granules put in a bowl with water, time it in microwave, stir it, time it again.
  • Block of gelatin you just put in the microwave
  • Next you need the Charles Fox Supra colour palette
  • Colloduim and Gelatin
  • You can also build it up by using tissue in between layers, make sure you don't use the straight edges.

How to heat up Bottle Gelatin:

  • Put the bottle in a bowl of warm water
  • Put it in the microwave for 20 secs then take it out the the microwave and shake the bottle.
  • Put it in for another 20 seconds, take it out then take of then end nosel, close and shake last time and it should be ready to use.
  • Make sure you test the product on the back of your hand. If you think its liquid enough after a smaller amount of time you can take it out.

How to heat up a block of Gelatin:
  • Place the Gelatin cube in a bowl and place in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

Creating my own Burn:
  • We started with using the block of Gelatin for this burn so we placed the gelatin in the microwave for 10 seconds.
  • We then tested the Gelatin on the back of hand to make sure its runny (however not to runny)
  •  You then have to quickly work with it before it dries on the skin so place the amount on the area you are working with (I worked on my partners hand). Then using a spatula you can break up the gelatin on the hand to make it go lumpy.
  • Next hair dry the area to make sure the product is completely dry before working on it. Once dry, powder the area.
  • The using the supra colour palette I started working into the gelatin and onto the hand to create colour, make sure you use dark colours first trying the create a dimentional effect by using a small thin brush.
  • Stiple on the colour don't paint it in and also try not to have hard lines. Finally I added bit of blood to the area and also I added some yellow puss to make the burn look slightly infected so blood/puss. You can also add glycerin to give the area a shine on the skin.

I really enjoyed creating the burns and enjoyed learning about using different products to create different prosthetic. I think the thing I found the hardest was working with colours and trying to make the burn area look realistic. I think I could of probably added more gelitine to the hand as the gelitine kind of shriveled up to the middle of hand so its quite a small area.

 Health and Safety:
  • Don't run in the studio
  • be aware of your surroundings
  • make sure client/partner is covered to protect clothing from products
  • Make sure when using gelatin to keep on eye on product in microwave.
  • Also test the heat of gelatin on yourself before pouring on someone
  • Always wash hands before working on someone
  • Keep lids on products after use
  • Keep work station tidy
